IED Master Madrid is launching a contest to win scholarships for Masters of Design and Innovation programmes. The first prize for each Master is a scholarship that covers the cost of the course fee (16.000 € for the European Design Labs and 12.500 € for the other three masters).

Masters of Design and Innovation are the most advanced Master courses at IED Master Madrid. Their objective is to train professionals so that they acquire the necessary skills to overcome the challenges that arise from the global economy and tomorrow´s society by means of developing a cross-sectional work methodology, lateral thinking and  leadership skills.

All programmes are carried out, in terms of methodology, following our own philosophy: the culture of the project.

They include workshops, study trips abroad, seminars, lectures, and a research project that runs throughout the whole academic year. At the end of the course the student presents the result of this process in the form of  new products, services, strategies, communication concepts, spaces and systems that will serve users, companies and society at large in an innovative way.

To enter the contest you must fill in this form and attach your C.V. and motivation letter. You might also attach your creative portfolio if you have one. The contest will close on September 30th, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. CET.  We recommend participants not to delay their entries until the last day. In previous contests, depending on country of origin, internet service supplier and bandwidth, some people could not submit their entries in time.

Terms and conditions:
1. Participants from all countries and nationalities are welcome.
2. Participants may apply only once, for only one of the Masters of Design and Innovation Platform. Participants who apply for more than one Master course will be disqualified.
3. Scholarships are awarded solely on IED Master Madrid criteria, based on tyhe documentation sent by participants and their potential.
Participants might be asked to have a personal interview, by telephone or skype.
4. Prizes. First prize: a scholarship covering the course fee of the chosen Master programme. Second prize: 20% discount on the course fee of the chosen Master programme. IED Master Madrid might decide not to award any of the prizes if none of the participants are considered suitable.
5. The first prize sholarships cover course fees, which are: 16.000 € for Master of European Design Labs, or 12.500 € for Master of Strategic Design Labs, Master of Product Design Labs and Master of Communication Design Labs.
6. The second prize covers 20% of the course fees, whic are: 3.200 € for Master of European Design Labs, or 2.500 € for Master of Strategic Design Labs, Master of Product Design Labs and Master of Communication Design Labs.
7. All winners must pay enrolment fees for their chosen course, which are: 5.000 € for Master of European Design Labs, or 3.000 € for Master of Strategic Design Labs, Master of Product Design Labs and Master of Communication Design Labs.
8. Enrolment fees must be paid with a week from the date when winners are notified.
9. General rules. Winners must sign and comply to the General Rules that regulate attendance, behaviour and performance of all students at IED Master Madrid. They must also sign and abide the specific rules of attendance, behaviour and performance specific to recipients of scholarships.
10. The prizes are only valid to study the specific course chose by the contestant at the time of submitting his/her entry at IED Master Madrid.
11. Winners of this contest must attend at least 90% of activities of the course.
12. Winners of this contest must actively get involved in all multidisciplinary and special projects proposed by the school: presentations, contests, workshops, etc.
13. Winners of this contest must actively get involved in reporting and documentation of the courses´s activities: blogging, travel diary, reporting on wor5kshops, conferences, etc.
14. All master programmes need a minimum number of enrolled students to commence. In the unlikely event of an specific course not reaching this minimum number, the winner of a prize to that course will not be able of doing the course. There will be no reimbursemnet of the prize, but any enrollment fees paid by winners will be reimbursed.
15. Winners can only enjoy the prize for the courses starting on January 2011.
16. Not complying with any of these terms and conditions will disqualify the winner, who will loose the prize.
17. Winners agree to have their names and photographs published on print and on-line media of IED Madrid.
18. The contest will close on September 30th, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. CET.

From June 7-12, 2010, European Design Labs students traveled to Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm where they developed a workshop with international designer Sigga Heimis and visited factories, museums and centers of art and design.

From June 7-12, 2010, European Design Labs students traveled to Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm where they met international designer Sigga Heimis and visited factories, museums and centers of art and design.

Their trip began in Denmark. In Copenhagen, they visited the innovative warehouse Illums Bolighus, which is entirely dedicated to interior design, and the Dansk Design Center, a professional center for training in design and innovation.

The students also visited temporary exhibits and the sculpture garden at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaeck and the Fritz Hansen factory specializing in furniture design in Alleröd, where they attended the complete development of the production process of the emblematic chair “Ant” by Arne Jacobsen. The company impressed them with its excellent technology, the cleanliness of its facilities, and the quality of its products, services and customer service. They confirmed how important it is to take care of every aspect involved in producing a design.

In Malmö, Sweden, the students participated in a workshop in Labland, the studio of Irish designer Sigga Heimis, a professional who is known for her work with Ikea and Fritz Hansen. They collaborated with her on the creation of a collection of cut and folded metal, following a real briefing, sharing their doubts and proposals. The research generated a lot of creative alternatives that, throughout the course of only one day’s work, they surprised the designer with their great finishing touches and effectiveness. The result was a very effective workshop: a professional job developed in a professional environment.

Sigga herself accompanied the students on their private visit of the Ikea headquarters in Älmhult and presented some of her designs for the brand. As well, a product designer, who is a member of the staff they met during their visit, revealed the keys to the design department’s operations, as well as the company’s history and ideology.
In Stockholm, they saw the collections of the Moderna Museet and the Konstfack, the main Swedish university of design, graphic and fine arts, among other spaces that are reference points of design.

Nipa Doshi, co-creator, along with Jonathan Levien, of the studio Doshi Levien, held the workshop Design Guerrilla Madrid from June 28 – July 2, 2010 with the 2010 European Design Labs students.

The designer is interested in the visual language of the city and its interpretation from a design perspective, considering it to be a free environment in which designers can develop their work in multiple ways. The workshop sparked an interaction between students and Madrid’s public space through its transient transformation, as well as their commitment to search for optimal quality throughout the design process.

The workshop also placed emphasis on working in groups, which is becoming increasingly necessary in present-day design. Throughout the week, students achieved perfection in colors, textures and materials. The projects: an intervention on the terrace of a centrally-located apartment, a performance installation in a historical public square, and the reinterpretation of an in-transit public space through materials; all projects reflected on the relationship between public and private environments, ways of perceiving the city in which we live and the possibilities of reinterpretation of our surrounding daily environment.

Doshi Levien is a London design studio that was created in 2000 by Jonathan Levien (Elgin, Scotland, 1972) and Nipa Doshi (Bombay, 1971). Their work offers the combination of Indian material and visual culture with a marked approach in terms of industrial design production. A synthesis of technology, narration, artisan creations and industrial design. Their curriculum vitae highlights their multidisciplinary nature, with an installation for the Wellcome Trust group, an interactive design piece for Intel, creative management and interior design for Nokia, product design for Tefal, furniture design for Moroso and footwear design for John Lobb.

Elisabeth Pastor, partner and co-founder of Humantific, participated in the international conference Icograda Design Week, with the slogan “Straight to Business” in Madrid.

This expert in design and communications, who will develop a workshop for the next edition of the Communication Design Labs Masters, was at the branch of IED Master Madrid to answer a few questions regarding her personal vision of the future role of designers and the new possibilities of design and communications in the business world.

How is design reacting to the economic crisis?
Regarding the crisis situation and facing a decrease in professional demand, my recommendation is to be focus in a very direct way. Right now in Spain there are many problems and we have to find solutions, taking a little step backwards to get a better perspective and say, “in addition to knowing how to make a website or design a product, I am a designer, which means I know how to think and I can help try to solve some of these problems.” I would like to refer to the quote by Charles Eames when he was asked, “What are the frontiers of design?” and he answered, “What are the frontiers of problems?”… Design is a solution to an existing problem. There’s a lot of work to be done here.

How should a designer be trained nowadays?
One of the fundamental things in design and information management, which is still only infrequently taught, is to understand design as a way of helping people search for and find ways to do something…, aside from using communication as a form of expression. That is a fundamental part of our work, from the perspective of knowing how to communicate easily and effectively. For example, a graphic designer designs a good subway map that allows people to navigate through the city; it is something useful and permanent. Companies would give anything to have a permanent map of the market, which would allow them to direct themselves and know where things are currently going and where they can go in the future.
Designers already have the tools to make good maps; it’s just a question of learning how to apply them in the business world once they know how to interpret them. They have to know how to use the language of design to give answers to the needs that are presented to them.

What is the present-day role of designers?
The traditional vision of design is not enough to reach businessmen and be able to help them. Designers have to learn how to speak a different language, one that is not only focused on form, aesthetics…They have to give solutions to existing problems. We’re talking about Design 3.0 that goes beyond the design of a product according to a given briefing. It’s a design in which ‘Sense Making’ becomes more important, in which the creative process is shared and worked with the client in a very direct way, understanding their problems while defining the project. Encompassing processes in a more visual, strategic way, allowing them to see that you are helping them think in a new way, a way they may not be used to, to find solutions.
You can even help them find solutions in fields other than design. Designers are people who help thinking, but are not experts in the area – they do not know everything – they are not financial analysts, engineers or pharmacists. What they do is help each client think within their specialty.

Designers Alberto Gobbino Ciszak and Andrea Caruso Dalmas, from the studio Ciszak-Dalmas, have created an innovative artisan exhibit cart for showing the clothing collection inspired by the sarongs of Indian designer Kavita Parmar.

She presented her new collection at the store RaastaThe Seed, located in a renovated 3-story building, formerly an old carriage garage, on the main road Jorge Juan in the center of Madrid on June 9, 2010.

The young designers were hired by the exhibitor “Carro Lungi,” which was done post-show in order to exhibit this designer’s collection, which is housed in Madrid. Made by hand using commonly-used objects from daily life, reused and reinterpreted, they enhanced the Lungi collection, which reflects on sustainability and encourages creators and communities to maintain their traditional artisan craftwork. The pieces reclaim Lungi, a textile made of traditional cotton from the South of India, which is manufactured using artisan manual looms in a completely unique way such that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Ciszak Dalmas, former European Design Labs students, created their own studio in 2009 upon completing the Masters program. They work in Madrid and Torino for various companies and collaborate with academic institutions on design, innovation and communications projects.

Design Magazine published a report on the Carro Lungi project in its June 24^th edition.

The *S,C,P,F… agency, directed by Toni Segarra, has received a Bronze Lion in the Film section of the Cannes Festival, held from June 20-26, 2010. Their advertisement “Security Camera” promoted the theater work based on the novel 1984 by Orwell, performed in various cities in Spain a few months ago by actor/director Tim Robbins’ company.

The spot reflected on the loss of intimacy and our growing vulnerability and impotence before the progressive audiovisual control to which we are submitted throughout our daily lives. The other winning agency was McCann Erickson Madrid, awarded with two Bronze Lions for “T-Moty” (for Campofrío Finissimas) and “Exchange” (Coca-Cola Zero). Including these 3 awards, the total number of Lions won by Spanish national agencies at the 57^th Edition of the Cannes Festival comes to 28. 14 Spanish projects made it to the finalists.

Toni Segarra is the Director of the Communication Design Labs Masters, dedicated to communications and design and focused on the new role of creators in companies. The course began in January 2010.

From May 24-28, 2010, designers held the workshop 14 Local Links with European Design Labs students. The workshop was intended to put students in contact with local craftsmen so that they may research their work processes, document them and share these experiences.

Jaime Hayon visited the European Design Labs students on June 16th and 17th, 2010, in order to review their work. Matteo Zorzenoni, a member of his production team, accompanied him on this second review, along with the Master’s Coordinator and the two tutors.

Jaime was satisfied with the design development and the professionalism with which students have focused their thesis projects. He commented possible doubts and interpretations with each of them, clearly defining the themes and lines of action according to which they will direct the evolution of their final designs.

He also highly valued their work capacity in following such an intense weekly schedule, which includes personal research time as well as common lecture time. Jaime’s next visit to the students is scheduled for July 23, 2010.

European Design Labs 2010 students have visited Milan from April 13th to april 18th, 2010. There they enjoyed the Design Week with the celebration of the Salone del Mobile and the Fuori Salone.
